Sock knitting patterns are, for the most part, just recipes. Swap in that heel, switch out that toe, tweak the cuff like this or that, and with a little practice you have your own custom sock pattern.

This recipe is my go-to pattern when making top-down short row heel socks. Choose a snug ribbing or a looser ribbing. Choose a basic wrap and turn heel or a shadow wrap heel. Finish off with a round toe or a wedge toe.

Pros and cons are included at each step to help you decide which ribbing, heel, and toe will suit your style best. Knit both socks the same or knit one sock each way. See which you like best!

Sizes:
Adult Small / Medium / Large to fit a 8” 9”, or 10” (20.3, 22.8, or 25.4 cm) foot circumference. These are designed to have approximately 10% negative ease in foot circumference for a secure fit.

Yardage:
100 grams/420 yards of fingering weight sock yarn. Add extra yardage if knitting a cuff longer than 5". Optional, 70-100 yards of a contrasting color for heels and toes.

Gauge:
8 stitches and 12 rows per inch on size US 1, blocked.

Needles:
US 1 (2.25 mm) set of double pointed needles, 9” circular sock needle, or 32” to 40” circular needle for magic loop
